So where does this leave us?
The structure of the thesis
Footnotes
This chapter has explained the theoretical frameworks within which this thesis is situated and which have informed the research and its methodologies. Chapter 2 further situates the thesis methodology and the research process by introducing the theories, practices, bodies and structures comprising urban community gardening, while also outlining the individuals interviewed and the particular bodies they represent in this thesis (the so called ‘hats’ they wear). Chapter 2 also includes an explanation of the geographical situation within Sydney of the networks examined and the reasons for this.

Chapter 3 represents the first chapter of findings, acting as a more coherent portrayal of the structure and organisation of the various gardens visited and individuals consulted. Further, the chapter examines how the networks within and between gardens operate, and the ties to the broader community, especially in terms of how this relates to information flows and access to growing spaces for the community. Ties to affiliated bodies are examined, as are the actions of these with regard to community gardens. Chapter 4 builds on these bases, to discuss and assess the research findings in light of the chosen theoretical frameworks and look at processes and structures surrounding community gardens in Sydney, through the lens of ‘accessibility’ and engagement with the spaces between various bodies. Finally, Chapter 5 serves as a reflective space, in which I assess the relevance of the chosen theoretical frameworks, as well as consider any scope for further work.
