Introduction
A brief stroll through the gardens
Affiliated bodies
But what does it all mean??
Footnotes
An exploration of the spaces within and between various gardening and affiliated bodies, within which individuals and groups may act for ‘sustainability’, requires an initial introduction to the manifestations of those spaces. This chapter provides such an illustration and contextualises further examination of themes such as ‘access’, ‘local’, ‘embeddedness’, ‘community’ and ‘sustainability’.

The community gardens visited displayed great diversity. This was seen both within and between gardens, as were areas of overlap and continuity. All the garden groups represented diverse collections of individuals and highlighted issues of access and embeddedness. Diversity was also evident in terms of the physical structure, tenancy arrangements, membership options, managerial structure, conflict resolution techniques, interaction with the wider community, methods of communication and current issues. This chapter comprises an illustration of some of these characteristics, which highlights the variations and continuities encountered between and within the gardens and serves as a rich portrait of the myriad activities and spaces they represent. The structure and function of supporting bodies such as the Australian City Farms and Community Gardens Network (ACFCGN) and South Sydney Council (SSC) are also sketched here.
