Throughout this study, emphasis was placed on being of assistance to the bodies engaged with, acting for sustainability in ways that were deemed appropriate for myself. This was seen as a way to break down the action/academy binary, through engagement with bodies and issues surrounding urban community gardens, informed by literature encountered both prior to and during the study. Further, such theoretical frameworks were made accessible to interested individuals, as were copies of the work as it progressed. The work and theory that was encountered and developed were seen as relevant by many individuals involved. Hence, ongoing feedback to various bodies is intended as action in this realm continues; this study will remain accessible to any interested parties and be made available to resource centres such as the UNSW Ecoliving Project developing adjacent to the garden. Emphasis was thus also placed on remaining active, accessible and willing and able to be contacted. Action was seen as vital to understanding; hence, issues such as balancing commitments and the variation in engagement with individuals were reflected upon in terms of their effect on action and access, which fostered a deeper awareness of the contingency of these.
The resulting work is not posited as a representation of the aspirations and beliefs of the individuals engaged with, although these may have survived the writing process in places. Rather, the work is seen as a situated reflection upon issues concerning sustainability surrounding community gardens in Sydney, as focussed through the lens of access. As it is produced by a hopefully embedded academic, a main function of the work is thus to provide an account which is aware of its position and accepts that what is portrayed is affected both by the vantage point and the concerns held. Hence, the work understands and acknowledges the act of authorship. This has important implications for network analysis. It is important to understand that the network ends only where it is implied to, that it will always be a porous and contingent body and that any other such study will encounter and portray a different network. |
